Hoping to share some of the ol’ Donald Malter Experience and Brain cells

I’d like to bring the wealth of experience garnered over some 35 years and make it available for the benefit of the next generation of music hopefuls.

The Industry is in a period of change we are entering a new paradigm where the old rules are being rewritten but also musicians now have opportunities before them that most musicians in the past could only fantasize about

With years of experience working for some of the biggest names and brands in Show business including BMG Music, SONY and Warner Music Group, I’m looking forward to being able to engage with new musicians and help bring about change that will benefit all.

The first of these new initiatives will involve a series of Podcasts whereby I’ll discuss with other leading executives within Entertainments the matters and affairs of the day whilst also adding an educational element.

The idea behind this all is to help as many new, young and upcoming musicians along the way as possible and if I can help pass on the experience gained over these past 35 years then I’ll be a satisfied man

Over the weeks and months to come I’ll will be discussing the state of the Industry financially, the consolidation and changes it is experiencing and how this affects new Musicians. How also there has never actually been a better time to be a Musician with all the tools and channels musicians of today have before them such as Social Media etc.

I’ll also be discussing more conventional ideas such as Publishing, Record Deals, Touring and how to build a brand that is sustainable and also profitable.

A further Hunter S Thompson reality check…

Yesterday in an idle musing I posted what was supposed to be a widely credited quote by the late Hunter S Thompson relating to the Music Industry. I wondered if anyone would (rightly) pull me up on it as the truth is…… the quote never existed at all and in fact in reality the nearest thing that came to it was a similar quote about the TV Industry made in 1985

For more information and perhaps a better and more cogent explanation follow this quote “Where Pimps Run Free” . The crazy thing is the quote might well have been written about the Music Industry but as with most things the retelling is often more entertaining than the actual fact in itself…

Feel free to comment, let me know what you think….

Was Hunter S Thompson right?

“The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side.”

So says good ‘ol Hunter. Is he correct and if so why and how?

Any comments then feel free to shout out below and lets get the conversation started. In the meantime and in the ensuing pages, Podcasts and various other projects I hope to be able to shine a light perhaps on some of the issues that affect us all within the Music Industry today and into the future.

Donald Malter

Welcome…….

With a career spanning more decades in Music than publicly I’d care to acknowledge…welcome to DonaldMalter.com.

The plan is to inform, hopefully educate but overall to entertain. I hope that via this medium I’ll be able to help pass on some of the experience and wisdom acquired over more decades that I care to admit in this crazy business we call “show” but…. stick along for the ride and hopefully we’ll have some fun.

The Music Business is in a state of change.

The global pandemic has forced those within the Industry to completely review and reformat in many ways their “modus operandi”. What worked even in some cases in 2019 no longer works in 2021 and to survive, Companies and Artists will have to evolve in how they approach the Industry and their careers.

Hopefully with a series of exciting new projects lined up for 2021 and beyond, I’ll be able to help influence and shape in a positive manner some careers and in turn help bring me back to why I got involved in the Industry all those years ago.
